What is qualitative and quantitative data?
Qualitative Data: Qualitative data is an opinion that is not measured in numbers eg.
Deciding which group a certain pebble belongs to. |
Quantitative Data:Quantitative data however is measured in numbers eg.
Measuring the angle of a slope on the beach. |
Primary and secondary data
Primary data is data collected by the researchers for specific purposes
Secondary data is research conducted by the government or larger organisations through a census of the population that is used by people other than the original researcher.
What is : Random,Stratified and Systematic data collection
Random data is data collected completely at random eg. collecting pebbles off of the beach randomly and measuring their volume, height, width and depth.
Stratified data is data that first divides the population into groups and then measures each group separately randomly or systematically eg using a quadrat and then choosing pebbles randomly or choosing specific squares to pick stones from.
Systematic data collection is collected by using a specific method eg. using a a quadrat every three meters and then choosing the pebbles in the four corners of the quadrat and one from the center.
What is a transect?
It is a straight line or narrow section through an object or natural feature or across the earth's surface, along which observations are made or measurements taken.

How did we collect our data?
We used a measuring tape to measure a straight line across the width of the beach. secondly, we marked out ,at three meter intervals, the place we were to place our quadrat. finally we chose a pebble from every corner of the quadrat and measured their height, width and depth with a caliper. Then used a measuring jug to calculate the volume. We also used a gun clinometer.

We came to the conclusion that the longshore-drift was moving in a direction of east to west because our methods of obtaining data did not take into account that the beach was constantly being replenished by the council so our results would not show the effects of longshore drift on the angle of the beach because that depended on where the council dropped the pebbles.
